Mama Mia!

Okay so recently I've had the opportunity to see both the theatrical version and the movie version of Mama Mia. I have to say that I enjoyed the play much more ~ but only because there is nothing like actually being there. The other thing it has in its favor is the singing voices of the actors. These guys were awesome and while I am a Pierce Brosnan fan, the man should NEVER sing. I thought Meryl Streep did a great job ~ especially in the scene just before the wedding when she sang "The Winner Takes it All." It about brought me to tears. Christine Baranski was great as always and I didn't realize that the mom's other friend is the same actress that plays Mrs. Weasley in the "Harry Potter" movies. The movie was able to do more in terms of setting and space ~ the scenery was just beautiful.
The other plus about the stage version was the "concert" at the end of the show. EVERYONE was up on their feet singing along and dancing. I met Jen & her Aunt Valerie in Orlando for the performance and we had a wonderful time.
For the movie version I took Julianne. Her friend Sara and Sara's mom came with us. We had a good time but at the end for the "sing along" no one really sang ~ well, I did.. I just couldn't help it but I kept it fairly low. It would be a great movie to go see with a bunch of friends so you could all make fools of yourself in the theatre.
I have to say that I've usually enjoyed ABBA's music but now when I hear it, I have a story behind it and can visualize it much more. Needless to say the Abba Gold CD has been playing in my car ever since (except when Richard is in the car ~ He HATES it and I'd like to stay married to him!).
I know this movie got panned but I really enjoyed it. If you are looking for a great movie with substance, this is not the movie for you but if you want to just have a good time I highly recommend it, especially if the live version comes your way.

Are you kidding? That other woman is the woman who plays Mrs. Weasley?! No way!!!

I kept trying to figure out who she was, but I never would have guessed that.

Thanks for your review--I've been debating on whether to see it. I love Abba's music, but heard the movie was terrible. I will definitely see it--when it comes out on DVD. *smiles*

I haven't seen either one yet! The movie probably isn't playing anymore. I should check it out.

I've been wanting to see this movie but I mostly get to see the latest kid movies. IGOR looks cute!

I had the same thoughts you did about the movie. The scene that got me was just before the wedding when Meryl was painting her daughter's toenails. What a touching scene it was. And Pierce should never sing in public again. It should be a law!
